Saint Maria Goretti Art Print
This 5x7" art print is a reproduction of my original charcoal drawing featuring Saint Maria Goretti
On July 6, 1902, an eleven year old girl named Maria Goretti was murdered by her 20 year old neighbor, Alessandro Serenelli after she refused his impure advances.
As she lay dying in the hospital, Maria said that she forgave Alessandro and wanted him to be in heaven with her one day.
Six years later, little Maria appeared to Alessandro in a dream while he was in prison. She held 14 lilies in her arms and again repeated the words, “I forgive you.” Alessandro had been unremorseful up until this point. But so moved was he by this dream, he experienced a conversion of heart. His demeaner immediately changed and he was eventually released from prison three years early.
He then repented wholeheartedly to Maria’s family and even attended Christmas Mass with Maria's mother. He later joined the Capuchin Franciscans, where he lived out the rest of his life in service to God.
While reflecting on the life of Saint Maria Goretti this month (Feast day, July 6th) let us hear the echo of Jesus’ words in Sacred Scripture and ask for the graces necessary to forgive all those who have wounded us..
Then Peter approaching asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.” -Matthew 18: 21-22
In this piece, you see Maria Goretti holding 14 lilies to represent the 14 stab wounds which she received from Alessandro. The words “ti perdono,” Italian for “I forgive you,” are shown as well.
Let us never underestimate the power of these three simple words: I. Forgive. You.
Saint Maria Goretti, pray for us!
